Biography
Dr. Valeria Anabalón is a Marine Biologist and holds a PhD in Oceanography with specialization in Global Change, with more than 15 years of experience in oceanographic research, phytoplankton ecology, and the dynamics of marine ecosystems associated with coastal upwelling zones. Her scientific career has been primarily linked to the University of Concepción.
She specializes in biological oceanography, phytoplankton community structure and dynamics, harmful algal blooms (HABs), marine hypoxia, and environmental variability in upwelling systems of the Southeastern Pacific and Northeastern Atlantic. Her research has contributed to studies on primary productivity, phytoplankton biomass, marine organic carbon fluxes, and oceanographic variability.
Dr. Anabalón has extensive experience in interdisciplinary research related to global climate change, the application of remote sensing tools to marine ecosystems, and the analysis of ocean productivity. She has also participated in numerous oceanographic cruises and has strong technical expertise in biological sample processing, flow cytometry, total organic carbon (TOC) analysis, microscopy, photosynthetic pigment analysis, and oceanographic data analysis.
She is the author and co-author of scientific publications in high-impact international journals such as Progress in Oceanography, Remote Sensing, Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, and PLoS ONE, contributing significantly to the understanding of phytoplankton dynamics, mesoscale structures, and marine biogeochemical processes.
