Thamara Matamala Asencio

Research Assistant

Biography

Thamara Matamala Asencio is a Marine Biologist from the Austral University of Chile and Principal Researcher at the Fisheries Research Program of the Austral University of Chile (UACh), Puerto Montt Campus.

She joined the program 12 years ago, where she has conducted research, coordinated projects, and participated in scientific expeditions aboard the research vessel Dr. Jurguen Winter.

Her main research interests include benthic marine biodiversity, science communication, and socio-environmental management. She has participated as both a coordinator and researcher in several projects funded by FIPA, FONDECYT, and the INCAR FONDAP Center.

Selected Projects

  • FIPA Project 2025-04: Assessment of small-scale aquaculture sites within Indigenous Peoples' Marine Coastal Areas (ECMPOs) in the Los Lagos Region.
  • Fixed Stations Network for Sea Urchin, Luga Seaweed, and Clam Resources in the Los Lagos and Aysén Regions.
  • FIPA Project 2025-08: Ecological restoration as a nature-based solution to enhance the resilience of coastal marine benthic ecosystems to climate change.
