Dr. Diego Valenzuela Miranda

Biography

Dr. Diego Valenzuela-Miranda is a researcher at the INCAR² Center, specializing in genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, and bioinformatics applied to aquaculture. His research focuses on understanding the molecular responses of aquatic organisms to pathogens, parasites, antiparasitic drugs, and environmental changes, with particular emphasis on salmonids, Caligus rogercresseyi, Piscirickettsia salmonis, and microbiota associated with aquaculture systems.

Part of his work has focused on the study of molecular mechanisms associated with tolerance and sensitivity of Caligus rogercresseyi to antiparasitic treatments used in salmon farming. In this context, he has investigated transcriptomic responses, regulation by non-coding RNAs, genomic variation, associated microbiota, and potential adaptive mechanisms under the selective pressure exerted by antiparasitic drugs.

His research integrates omics and bioinformatics tools to study host–pathogen–parasite interactions, resistance and susceptibility to sea lice, aquaculture microbiomes, and molecular pathogen detection using high-throughput sequencing and Nanopore technologies. He has contributed to scientific publications on sea lice genomics, salmonid transcriptomics, microbiota, immune response, and bacterial pathogen surveillance in aquaculture.
