Dr. Antonio Casuso Cabrera

Biography
Dr. Antonio Casuso is a researcher in biochemistry, marine biology, and aquaculture biotechnology, with academic training at the University of Havana (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Science) and a PhD in Sciences from the University of Concepción (UdeC), Chile. His scientific career focuses on the functional genomics of non-model marine organisms, with particular emphasis on species of relevance to aquaculture. In his work, Dr. Casuso Cabrera integrates disciplines such as genomics, transcriptomics, and epigenomics to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying immune responses in fish and their interactions with pathogens. He has worked with a wide range of organisms, including bacterial pathogens (Piscirickettsia salmonis, Vibrio spp.), invertebrates (Panulirus argus, Caligus rogercresseyi), and vertebrates (Salmo salar). A central line of his research is fish vaccinology, an area with significant knowledge gaps and high potential to drive the sustainable development of aquaculture at both national and international levels. He has participated as an associate researcher in multiple FONDECYT and FONDEF projects. Currently, he is the Principal Investigator of a FONDECYT Postdoctoral project awarded in 2024 and carried out at the Center for Biotechnology of UdeC. This research evaluates the optimal vaccination window in Atlantic salmon through the analysis of transcriptional and epigenetic patterns in fish immunized with commercial vaccines. At the INCAR² Center, he serves as a Postdoctoral Researcher.
