INCAR² Opens New Facilities to Advance Applied Aquaculture Research

The INCAR² Center for Applied Research has opened new facilities at the Universidad de Concepción (UdeC), marking a new phase focused on transforming aquaculture science into practical solutions for a more sustainable industry.
Located next to UdeC’s Biotechnology Center in Concepción, Chile, the new facilities are designed to strengthen scientific collaboration, knowledge generation and technology transfer, while providing a space for closer engagement with companies, research institutions and other stakeholders across the aquaculture sector.
The opening also reflects INCAR²’s evolution from the original FONDAP INCAR research center, led by Dr. Renato Quiñones, toward a new applied research model under the direction of Dr. Cristian Gallardo-Escárate.
According to Dr. Claudia Ulloa Tesser, UdeC Vice-Rector for Research and Development, the new stage builds on INCAR’s long-standing contribution to Chilean aquaculture while placing greater emphasis on translating scientific knowledge into societal and productive impact.
Gallardo-Escárate highlighted collaboration as a central goal of the new facilities. INCAR², he said, aims to bring researchers and industry stakeholders together to develop science-based solutions to the sustainability challenges facing Chilean aquaculture.
More than an expansion of physical infrastructure, the new facilities signal INCAR²’s broader strategy to strengthen connections between research, innovation and the aquaculture industry, accelerating the transfer of knowledge into technologies and solutions with real-world impact.
